Goat Cheese Tasting Sharon Franke
Twenty-five cheese-loving members enjoyed a bountiful buffet of American goat cheese at Casellula Cheese & Wine Café, a small brick-walled gem at 401 West 52nd Street on June 29, 2009. Lee Smith, publisher of Cheese Connoisseur magazine (www.cheeseconnoisseur.com) who sponsored the event, introduced the dairies whose offerings were featured, including Cypress Grove Chevre, Vermont Butter & Cheese Co., Redwood Hill Farm, Laura Chenel’s Chevre, and Cowgirl Creamery. Representatives from each company served and chatted about their specialties which were served with crusty bread and garnishes like lemon curd, avocado puree, fruit salsa, and olives. While everything from buttons of fresh cheese to aged feta was on the table, a particular favorite of attendees was the creamy and tangy Humboldt Fog from Cypress Grove Chevre, with its distinctive layer of ash in the center. Along with the cheeses, a selection of crisp summer wines was poured, complements of Gotham Wines & Liquors (www.gothamwines.com). Many thanks to Jackie Lieberman for organizing this great event.
