Looking Sharp for the Media Ellen Swandiak
NYWCA member Pamela R. Thomas lured renowned media trainer Lisa Ekus-Saffer and cohort Virginia Willis to reveal the secrets to creating memorable media appearances, at Honing Your Edge, held on September 29, 2009, in the futuristic Miele appliance showroom. Their message was simple. Whether developing a website or doing a spot on the Today show, you should be able to communicate your personal culinary message with three basic points, and no matter what tangents occur, you must always steer back to them. Use all avenues for promoting your message: a website, social media, podcasts, radio and TV.
Lisa stressed that repetition is KEY—a message must be heard seven times before it is remembered. Virginia’s expertise is both in front of camera (as in doing cooking demos for her book, Bon Appétit, Y’all) and behind the camera (as producer on Martha Stewart). She recommended wearing solid jewel tones, not black or white, and demonstrated the proper way to face the camera and pivot at the waist to interact with your host. The most important message: be friendly, call your host by name, show off your expertise and know the audience. Thirty-five members walked away from this event with practical suggestions and a new sense of confidence. I know I did.
