Little India Walking Tour ![]() On Sunday, April 27th join Surbhi Sahni, Executive Pastry Chef of Devi Restaurant, for an intimate tour of her home turf— Jackson Heights, Queens—otherwise known as Little India. Come hungry! The afternoon tour will kick off at Maharaja Sweets— a tiny shop on 37th Avenue—where you will enjoy a light nibble on north Indian street food known as chaat, salty namkin (snacks) comprised of crunchy fried bits, nuts, and dried fruits, rolled together in a distinctively South Asian sweet-salty-spicy mix, or Delhi-style sweets made from condensed milk, with a good cup of chai. As the locals say, it's good to begin a day with something sweet in anticipation that the rest of the day will be just as sweet. After this light bite, the tour will continue with a visit to Patel Brothers—one of the main grocery stores renowned for its diverse selection of produce and Indian food products. Here Surbhi will describe and discuss the use of Indian spices, pickles, chutneys, advise their best use in recipes, and point out favorite snacks of the local Indian population. Following your entrance into the world of Indian food, the next stop will be Butala Emporium for a chance to explore Indian artwork, furniture, books, handicrafts and music from India . Then, when your appetite has been stirred by this exotic interactive tour, Surbhi will whisk you off to one of her favorite neighborhood restaurants for lunch. Afterwards, if time permits, this will be followed by short visits to area garment and jewelry stores, as well as a walk around the area's garden district.
